How to downgrade your Psp from 2.5 - 2.6 to 1.5

How to downgrade your Psp from 2.5 - 2.6 to 1.5

Before we go into details about downgrading, it may be necessary to define first what we mean by "Psp". When we talk about the Psp or PSP system, we are actually referring to the PlayStation Portable system which is believed to be the first handheld video game gadget to rely on the Universal Media Disc (which is, in turn, an optical disc format.)

When we say PSP 2.5, PSP 2.6 and PSP 1.5, we are talking now about the versions of the firmware that the PSP you are using relies on. Firmware is simply a computer program geared especially for the hardware it is embedded within. But firmware goes a little bit further than ordinary software in that it is sort of like a cross between software and hardware. When you use a certain firmware version, most of the time it cannot be used without the hardware it was originally designed for. The firmware for a PSP is officially called PSP System Software by its original manufacturer Sony Computer Entertainment.

The PSP was originally designed by Sony Computer Entertainment employee Shin'ichi Ogasawara, on behalf of that company.

Now about the downgrade – one source on the net says to downgrade your PSP 2.5 and PSP 2.6 to the PSP 1.5 firmware version, you need to find someone first who actually owns a PSP 1.5 firmware model. Without that person and his PSP 1.5, you will find it impossible to downgrade. Another basic requirement is that your PSP unit should not be a TA-082 model.

There are now two sets of procedures to be followed – one for the PSP 1.5 owner and the other by the PSP 2.5-2.6 owner.

The PSP 1.5 person must copy certain folders into the /PSP/GAME/ section of his memstick. The folders to be copied are named downhelper and downhelper %. He should then try to secure the 1.50 update from the website of the Internet source, and the update should be placed in the memstick (in the /PSP/GAME/UPDATE area actually.) Next step is to initiate the downhelper program, which will result in certain files and the flash to be dumped out of the updater eboot straight into the memstick. You will then find that the program should exit, permitting you to delete the updater out of /PSP/GAME/UPDATE. What follows afterwards is that a new folder dubbed "DOWNDATER" should appear in the memstick's root. The PSP 1.5 owner will then send the "DOWNDATER" folder to the PSP 2.5-2.6 owner so that the latter person can try out the downgrade.

If you have PSP 2.5, the instructions are as follows:

1) Look for the folder labeled DOWNGRADER/2.50/DOWNDATERTEST so you can copy it into the /PSP/GAME/ area of the memstick.

2) The PSP 1.5 owner should then transfer the DOWNDATER folder to you so you can copy it into your memstick root.

3) You may then initiate both the GTA and the eLoader.

Look for the downdater test within the eLoader menu. Be careful because once you initiate that, no message will appear – rather the downgrader process will automatically start.

The memstick ought to start flashing right after, to show that the PSP in your memstick is being flashed out.

Wait at least one minute after your memstick quits flashing, before pressing on the power button to restart the PSP.

If the whole process went smoothly, you will wind up with a PSP 1.5 version. But the risk here is that if it didn’t, your PSP winds up into a bricked version.

You may rely on the Wab Version Changer to alter your PSP into a PSP v1.50 should it indicate that you have a PSP v2.01 instead.

For a PSP 2.6 firmware version, all the steps followed by a PSP 2.5 are to be followed, except for step 1 where a PSP 2.6 owner has to copy the folder labeled DOWNGRADER/2.60/DOWNDATERTEST into the memstick's /PSP/GAME/.

If all goes well, then you will wind up with a PSP 1.5 regardless of whether you originally had a PSP 2.5 or a PSP 2.6.
